Algeria ::

This is the Senegal site... The country of YOUSSOU NDOUR "The eigth wonder of the World" (According to the Times) ... The editor is Souley (Jules). This site is currently under construction. Very soon you will get more information about Senegal. In the mean time, here is something for you to enjoy.

Senegal is the western most country in the African continent. It covers an area of 196,192 sq. km. In 1993, the population was estimated at 8,152,000 inhabitants, and today more than 90% of Senegalese people are Muslim. European arrival in this part of the continent was in 1444 however, French settlement would only start in the late 1600's. During colonisation, Dakar was the capital of the French colonies in West Africa. Today in Dakar many buildings that were erected during the colonial period can be seen. The president's palace was the residential place of the former governor of West African French colonies. By 1887, France had given all Senegalese people living in Dakar, St. Louis, Goree, and Rufisque French citizenship. In 1914, Senegal elected its first black delegate: Blaise Diagne.

Senegal is the only country in West Africa which has never been ruled by a single party or a military regime as since the independence elections has been regularly held. By African standards it is a school of democracy for many other countries. In 1980, the president Senghor who was still in power since independence in 1960 did something without precedent in Africa: he voluntarily resigned and was replaced by his former prime minister Abdou Diouf. In April 2000 Abdoullay Wade was elected new President. Economically Senegal did not perform well after independence. As other countries in the Sahel it was hit by the droughts in 1973- 1974 and 1983-1984.

Ile de Goree
The Ile de Goree just off the coast from Dakar is the place of one of the oldest European settlements in West Africa. It was also a major port for the Slave trade.
