When you arrive by plane, or from the east Bamako is probably your first port of call in Mali. The city lies astride the River Niger. It is a great place to sit down in the shade and watch people walk around.
The major things to do include a visit to one of the markets, the sights include some fine examples of colonial architecture, but Bamako does not have historic highlights like Djenne, Mopti of Timbuktu. But Bamako being the major transport hub, your are bound to spend some time there and the city offers enough to make your stay a very enjoyable one.
